I am going to Ghana for 4 weeks through the support of an Experiencing the World Fellowship at the University of Notre Dame. During my 4 weeks, I am going to intern at a UN refugee clinic with a Ghanaian run NGO called The Cheerful Hearts Foundation. My goal is to better understand the role of medical NGOs in developing countries such as Ghana and to better understand ways to improve the current model.
Thus far, my preparations have included getting my visa, stocking up on sunscreen, understanding the vaccinations I need, and buying lots of bug spray. It doesn't feel real. I am excited that in 20 days, I will be flying into Accra. Although I am really excited, there are some terrifying aspects of this trip. I have never been one to "stand out in a crowd," but inevitably, I will stand out in Ghana. In the next few weeks, on top of finishing my classes and taking finals, I have to continue planning and packing for my experience. Needless to say, I am going to be very busy in the next three weeks...but a very good kind of busy.
